The Difference Between Counselling and Psychotherapy

While Counselling and Psychotherapy share some similarities, they differ in their scope, duration, and depth. Which one is right for you?

Counselling

Counselling is typically a short-term approach, ranging from 6 to 24 sessions, as a general guideline. This form of therapy can be helpful for addressing specific issues, such as relationship issues, work challenges, crossroads in life or bereavement. During counselling, we will focus on the issue you bring into therapy, often employing strategies and techniques to support you, working towards a clear end point.

Psychotherapy

A deeper and more comprehensive approach, Psychotherapy delves into the root of the issue, recognizing repeating patterns of unhealthy or unhelpful behaviours in the present day and looking at past experiences to identify where these patterns and ways of thinking may have originated from.  Psychotherapy is open-ended and often long-term, allowing for more profound personal growth and understanding.

Types of Therapy

At Piece of Mind, I offer a variety of therapeutic approaches to cater to your unique needs. These include:

puzzle piece logo  Psychodynamic

This approach uses our past experiences to understand how we behave in the present day. It works on the basis that we have unconscious thoughts and desires that inform our behaviour. We work to bring the unconscious thoughts into the conscious mind, making connections and interpretations between events, thoughts and feelings.

Psychodynamic Therapy

Every human being is born with an innate sense of what they need to thrive and survive. As we grow, this instinct becomes clouded by all the external influences in our lives. Person Centred Therapy aims to connect you back with your authentic self, so that you can live freely. We work on bringing you back to overseeing you and your own life. We'll work in the here and now of the experience you're living.

This is empowering therapy – you are the expert in the room.

Person-Centred Therapy

CBT stands for Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. It isn't what's happened to us that's the problem, it's how we think about what's happened to us that influences the way we act. We aim to change how we think about things and how we can change. This therapy is therapist led.
